A thought-provoking art installation has popped up in Queen Street Mall to commemmorate Remembrance Day on November 11.

RSL Queensland has invited members of the community to write messages of thanks and remembrance on hundreds of paper poppies across Friday November 3 and Saturday November 4.

The set-up, open from 10am to 4pm each day, also includes photos with educational information about Australia’s war history.

The installation has been designed to encourage Queenslanders to take a moment ahead of Remembrance Day and remember those who died or suffered for Australia in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

“As this installation grows with the involvement of thousands passing through Queen Street Mall, we hope to spark awareness and reflection of the importance in commemorating the legacy of Australian servicemen and women and honouring all service personnel who died while serving,” RSL Queensland State President Major General Stephen Day DSC AM said.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles has rejected the latest call to abandon the Gabba redevelopment, including the relocation of East Brisbane State School and temporary reuse of nearby Raymond Park.

After the Greens presented a petition to parliament from 3,909 people, Miles promised the new Olympic stadium would usher in a massive revitalisation of Woolloongabba and parts of Kangaroo Point, East Brisbane and South Bank.

Miles said the existing school was “too small for the number of families expected to call the reinvigorated Woolloongabba home” and students and staff would be relocated to Coorparoo.

“In relation to Raymond Park in Kangaroo Point, it has been identified as a temporary warm-up facility for athletes due to its proximity to the Gabba,” he said.

“It has been determined that the warm-up track will be located in the centre of Raymond Park, requiring no resumption of houses and limited impact on mature trees. While early planning considered an eight-lane track, a four-lane track with six-lane straight complies with the International Federation requirements and minimises impacts on residents and trees.”

Two men have been charged with attempted murder after an alleged shooting in Bowen Hills in Brisbane’s inner north earlier this year.

The charges relate to an incident in July where a 40-year-old man was allegedly shot through a front security screen door at a unit on Tufton Street.

He suffered injuries to his hip and pelvis and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Police on Thursday night charged a 53-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, both from East Brisbane, with several offences including attempted murder and attempted armed robbery.

Both were scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.

Storm activity may provide more problems for firefighters finally enjoying a cool change as they battle blazes across Queensland.

People are returning to their homes in fire-hit Tara west of Brisbane and the southern border town of Wallangarra after what was hailed as the “great escape”.

However, there are about 60 fires still burning in Queensland with a “prepare to leave” warning for residents at Carnarvon Gorge in the central highlands on Friday.

But police warned Queenslanders not to drop their guard.

“There may be some sense of optimism ... around the weather conditions that are going to be more favourable,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Ben Marcus said.

“This is not right across the state. We continue to see significant fire dangers.”

Storms across fire-hit areas across the Darling Downs and southern inland are expected to bring up to 30 millimetres of rain from Friday, continuing into next week.

Rural Fire Service Chief Superintendent Tony Johnstone said storms may provide another fire threat, with blazes sparked by lightning.

“I know people are looking forward to the storms. When storms come through we could end up with more dry lightning,” Johnstone said.

While Bill Hayden spent much of his life as an avowed atheist, he described his Catholic baptism in 2018 at the age of 85 as part of filling the “gnawing pain” in his heart and soul about the meaning of life.

Sister of Mercy Angela Mary Doyle, whose lifelong friendship and Christian example Hayden said at the time he felt “embraced and loved by”, was present at that service in the same Ipswich church he is farewelled in today.

Hayden had told of a family visit to Doyle in hospital which was a pivotal moment in his embrace of the church.

Doyle told the mourners that had Hayden remained an atheist to his recent death, “I’m certain that, to Bill’s astonishment, Jesus would have welcomed him”.

“Bill Hayden never looked away from a fight for a cause in which he believed,” Doyle said, recounting stories of his work back to his time as the federal member for Oxley and care for the largely refugee children of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School at Darra.

“We are all the better for his humanity.”

Former Labor prime minister Paul Keating and his modern-day counterpart, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have given their condolences to the family of late party stalwart Bill Hayden and described his vast impact on the organisation and country.

Keating walked mourners through a brief history of the “human zoo” that was the Labor party after the Second World War, and Hayden’s journey through and to the top of it.

“Bill’s re-establishment of federal Labor as a real and genuine force is without doubt the crowning achievement of his long public life. Without doubt,” Keating said. “We may see the likes of Bill Hayden again, but I doubt it.”

Albanese said that while some giants cast a shadow, Hayden had lit the road ahead and lay its foundations – including universal healthcare and the country’s first single mothers pension.

“He made it possible for Labor to return to its core mission of governing in the national interest and lifting the lives of his fellow Australians … we can be grateful that this child of the Depression, turned-police officer, joined the Australian Labor Party to advance his values.”

“On behalf of the Labor family, I express my deepest sympathies to his family who so generously shared him.”

The state funeral for Bill Hayden, the former Labor leader who went on to become Australia’s governor-general, has begun in Ipswich – about 30 kilometres south-west of Brisbane.

Hayden’s eldest surviving daughter, Georgina, tells mourners her siblings and mother, Dallas, shared him with “everyone, all our lives”.

“We’ve been told by many that sharing personal details, sharing our memories, is the expected thing. That people want to know what a wonderful father he was - he is,” she says.

“Like our father, we don’t feel constrained to do the expected thing.

“Like our father, we question why. Like our father, we wish we could do better, be better.

“Like our father, we adore our mother, we cherish our family.

“Like our father loved us – loves us – we love him.”

Mourners including Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese are in Ipswich for the funeral of former governor-general and Labor leader Bill Hayden.

Queensland’s new parliamentary youth justice reform inquiry is set to hold early hearings from November 22, as it calls for submissions from people and groups across the state.

The powerful, bipartisan, select committee – headed by independent Noosa MP Sandy Bolton – will adopt a “phased approach” to its year-long work and travel to regional areas.

“Communities across Queensland expect this committee to move the debate forward, not simply repeat what other committees have already done,” Bolton said in a statement.

“The committee takes its role very seriously and is committed to a process that delivers clear actions along the way.”

The committee will build an evidence base and identify possible solutions to the complex issue through initial hearings in Brisbane with experts, frontline organisations, legal advocacy groups and government departments this month before a broad consultation.

Submissions close on January 10.
