Officer charged with assault of Gold Coast man

By Cloe Read

An officer has been charged and stood down from the Queensland Police Service after allegedly assaulting a man on the Gold Coast.

The 38-year-old constable was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm after an incident at Clear Island Waters in July, in which a 31-year-old man suffered injuries.

Police said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening, and the male officer, who was off duty at the time, did not know the man.

“The member has been stood down with pay from the QPS and is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on October 9, 2024,” the QPS said.

Queen’s Wharf not yet high and dry

By Sean Parnell

The Star Entertainment Group, part of the consortium behind Queen’s Wharf, may have secured a financial lifeline but its future remains unclear.

The Star’s annual financial report, released on Monday night, reveals the Destination Brisbane Consortium will have massive debts due in December, despite most of Queen’s Wharf still being empty.

“The phased opening of a property of this size and scale causes uncertainty in the timeframe it may take for the DBC property’s earnings and cashflows to grow to a level where assistance is no longer required from its owners,” the report states.

The Star recently sold the long-term lease on the former Treasury casino building to Griffith University. It is still trying to sell other assets in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

After Treasury casino closed, The Star Brisbane took its place, the casino licence transferred from the company to the consortium, and the government appointed an external adviser to succeed the special manager and oversee long-promised integrity reforms.

Labor makes token Townsville stop its first official campaign call

By Matt Dennien

The Labor team has landed in Townsville for its first official stop of the campaign, spruiking its record in the key regional hub and again airing reminders about the last LNP government.

Speaking from The Ville hotel and casino, Miles also used the visit to detail the late-night rush before caretaker period commenced today to move to oust the city’s mayor.

“Townsville is the most important regional city and that means Townsville is important for Queensland’s future,” he told travelling and local journalists.

Flanking Miles in the press conference were Les Walker, Scott Stewart and Aaron Harper – who hold the three key seats in and around the city on margins of less than 4 per cent.

But after a trip to Cairns at the weekend, the day-one northern jaunt was short-lived. After landing shortly after 12 for a 1pm media conference, Miles, his team, and travelling media headed back to the airport for a 3pm flight somewhere else.

‘Mic drop moment’ as victorious Brisbane Lions honoured in the CBD

By Neesha Sinnya

Hundreds of Brisbane Lions supporters gathered in the CBD today to welcome home their premiership-winning team.

The pop-up Brisbane Lions Premiership Party in Queens Gardens, usually the site of rowdy union rallies, was hosted by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.

Schrinner’s speech was interrupted by a fan asking the mayor whether a new stadium was on the cards following the Lions victory.

“What we can give them now is love and respect … and a new stadium,” he replied.

“I think that’s the mic drop moment.”

The Brisbane Lions defeated the Sydney Swans last Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The incumbent Labor state government has promised a $500 million upgrade of the Gabba if re-elected, while the LNP will review options and has not ruled out a complete rebuild instead of a new stadium at QSAC.

How Maguire hopes to salvage relationship with Broncos’ old boys

By Nick Wright

New Broncos coach Michael Maguire has issued a plea to Brisbane’s past legends to keep faith in the club’s direction, as he officially took the reins from the departing Kevin Walters.

Walters’ removal as head coach of his beloved Broncos – the side he won four premierships with as a player and steered to last year’s grand final – has been met with angst by some of the side’s former champions, including Shane Webcke and Gordon Tallis.

However, Maguire has a history of working alongside men who have previously donned the colours of the teams he has coached, and he hopes to do the same at Red Hill.

“Everyone’s got their opinions, but at the end of the day I’m about making sure they see great performances on the field, and they become proud of that,” Maguire said.

“They’ve been able to put a history into this organisation, but it’s about this current, current crop of players creating their own now.

“I’ve only ever seen success doing that. I was fortunate to have people like Bob McCarthy, Johnny Sattler, Ronnie Coote, back at previous roles, so I do like the history. That’s the thing that draws me to the Broncos is history, but also to being able to create the history with the current playing group.”

Crisafulli says Queensland voting system ‘undemocratic’

By Cameron Atfield

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has ruled out forming minority government with One Nation or the Katters, as he warned of the “chaos” of a Labor-Greens coalition.

Speaking in Bundaberg today, Crisafulli said Queenslanders wanted certainty so he would not entertain the prospect of an LNP minority government, even if the seats fell that way.

And, after being coy yesterday, Crisafulli confirmed the LNP would preference Labor ahead of the Greens.

But he said compulsory preferential voting forced Queenslanders to favour one of the parties.

“One has led to the disintegration of health, housing, youth crime and cost of living, and the other is a political movement that wants to defund police,” Crisafulli said, before criticising compulsory preferential voting.

“Queenslanders shouldn’t be forced to have to vote for anyone they don’t want. It is undemocratic.”

Labor figures have long blamed LNP preferences to the Greens for the loss of former deputy premier Jackie Trad.

Crisafulli warned of Labor doing a deal with the Greens to cling to power.

Crisafulli already campaigning in Queensland’s most marginal seat

By Cameron Atfield

Day two of the Crisafulli campaign has landed in Bundaberg — Queensland’s most marginal seat — after an early morning flight from Cairns.

Visiting a local hire company, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli announced a $40 million commitment to provide security grants to small businesses.

It’s a little late for Network Truck and Car Hire boss Warren West, who nonetheless backed the idea as he told Crisafulli of 11 cars being stolen in the past 12 months.

Crisafulli said the grants would assist businesses to install measures such as CCTV, lighting and alarms.

And announcing it in Bundaberg was no mistake.

“I’m standing in a city that was decided by nine votes, so when Queenslanders go to the polls, they need to know their vote matters,” he said.

Labor’s Tom Smith represents the electorate, having beaten the LNP by just nine votes after preferences in 2020, meaning he would not have his job if just five of them voted differently.

It’s a brief stop, with Crisafulli and the media pack heading back to the charter flight waiting on the airport tarmac.

Miles takes action against Townsville mayor despite court threats

By AAP

A mayor accused of misleading voters about his army service in Australia’s biggest military city is facing a 12 month suspension.

Loading

Premier Steven Miles issued Troy Thompson with a show cause notice after cabinet discussed legal advice last night.

Nine News revealed Miles had sought the power to issue the notice as premier, rather than have it done by the local government minister.

Thompson is being investigated by the state’s corruption watchdog over matters including claims made during his mayoral campaign that he served five years in the army.

He conceded in a May interview on A Current Affair that he had misled voters about his military record, blaming “100-plus” concussions.

The notice accuses Thompson of risking the welfare of council staff and damaging confidence in local government.
