Scooter bandits tackle delivery rider in ‘brazen’ daytime robbery

Dashcam footage has captured the moment an alleged scooter bandit leaps from the back of a bike, knocking a food delivery driver off his scooter before stealing the vehicle in a “brazen” robbery at a stop light.

A 16-year-old has been charged with stolen vehicle and weapon offences over the incident in Sydney’s west on Monday afternoon and has been bailed to face a children’s court on December 15.

The teen was arrested at Cranebrook by patrolling police, a short time after the alleged robbery at the intersection of Copeland Street and Parker Street, Penrith.

The delivery rider’s scooter and mobile phone were also recovered.

At least three other people are still being sought.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon told 2GB on Wednesday the daylight robbery was an organised and brazen attack.

“The fact they had faces covered when they did that indicates there had been planning going into it,” Lanyon said.

Footage of the incident shows two people pulling up next to the delivery rider on a scooter before the passenger leaps off the back, knocking the rider off his bike.

A second scooter enters the frame, the masked rider approaching the victim while the leaping passenger picks up his scooter and rides away as a third alleged scooter bandit approaches on the footpath.

Nick, who didn’t divulge his surname, shared the video with 2GB hoping to find out why several calls to Penrith police station went unanswered. He said he couldn’t believe what he saw captured on his wife’s dashcam.

“When I actually viewed the footage, [it] shocked the bejesus out of me.

“It’s just amazing … the brazenness of it.”

“It almost looked choreographed.”

Nick said he tried to call police seven times and got no answer.

Lanyon said an “interactive voice response” system had failed for the second time in consecutive months and was currently being repaired. He encouraged people to call Triple Zero when a crime is in progress.

“It’s not acceptable that those calls went through … we’ll fix that system immediately,” Lanyon said.
