Enjoy a pie and a bonfire in the Southern 'Pie-lands' this winter

By Megan Doherty

It's winter and there's nothing better than a hot pie on a cold day.

The good folk of the Southern Highlands know this and they are devoting all of June to the humble pie, even declaring they will be renamed "the Southern Pie-lands" for the month.

PieTime 2018 will feature everything from going on a pie and pinot tour in a kombi van to a "pie-tea" - that would be a pie-themed high tea, of course.  The feature event will be Pie-Fest, a two-day pie festival,  at the Bong Bong Picnic Racecourse Bowral on June 23 and 24.

Destination Southern Highlands spokesman Steve Rosa said pies would also be on the menu of at least 42 iconic locations in the region.

“We can’t wait to welcome visitors to Australia’s home of pies, the Southern Pie-lands, to meet our local characters, enjoy our events, our hospitality and of course our pies,” he said.

A fun night out for families will be a "Pie Bonfire'' at the Tractorless Vineyard at Sutton Forest on Saturday, June 9 from 5pm to 10pm. There will be pies and pinot and the lighting of a huge bonfire at 5pm.

"After a year of building a gigantic stack of wood we are ready to strike the match,'' the organisers say.

The Pie Bonfire will be epic with a vineyard at Sutton Forest collecting the wood for a year.

And Canberrans can grab some of the glory and enter the NSW/ACT Best Pie Competition at the Bong Bong Racecourse from June 13 to 15. Home bakers, chefs, professional pie makers  are all eligible to enter.
