SCG Test as it happened: Warner’s farewell outing ends with 50 and 3-0 series win

And that’s all she wrote from the SCG. David Warner rides off into the T20 sunset and Pakistan are off to New Zealand for a series in the game’s shortest format as well.

Australia’s two-Test series against the West Indies begins on January 17, so less than two weeks away.

It’s a well-earned rest for Pat Cummins’ side - not least the skipper himself - given they’ve barely stopped in a near-all conquering 2023.

The Ashes and World Cup have rolled into a very impressive 3-0 start to the home summer, though considering the expectations early on, and the very limited Test cricket Pakistan play these days, the tourists have punched well above their weight.

A few catches being taken could have made for a very different affair at the SCG. Australia was just too good. But a thoroughly entertaining series and a fine one for Warner to go out on.

Steve Smith and Dave Warner were to serve their suspensions for the ball-tampering affair by returning to the grassroots: Smith at Sutherland and Warner at Randwick. To their eternal credit, they embraced the club scene.

Mike Whitney has been president of Randwick Petersham for 23 years.

His greatest pride – and there are plenty – lies in what he saw from Warner during his grassroots return.

Warner set the example at training, working as hard as he did for a Test match or an IPL season. He coached the kids, he had conversations with his fellow first-graders, which included a young Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams.

Sams has become a widely travelled T20 specialist; Sangha a Thunder and Blues player.

Warner made copious runs for his club, never taking it easy or under-rating his club opponents. Exemplary would best describe his club contribution during the international ban.

Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez has revealed a team exchange deal between Cricket Australia and the PCB to allow developing players in both countries to experience more of their contrasting conditions.

Aamer Jamal is a deserving man-of-the-match in a losing side for his 82 in the first innings and 6-69.

Pat Cummins is crowned man of the series for his 19 wickets at a stupendous average of 12, and leading Australia to a 3-0 series win.

Richie Benaud’s wife Daphne is on hand to present the Benaud-Qadar trophy.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne make very short work of the remaining runs. Labuschagne with an edge through the slips cordon for four.

A crowd of around 24,000 has been clocked for today - all here to see David Warner. And that makes for 125,000 across the four days of this Sydney Test.

Australia claim the series 3-0. Pakistan played better than that shows but just outclassed, particularly in the biggest moments.

And that’s it for David Warner. It took several minutes, but a DRS has overturned the on-field decision of not-out to an LBW shout. Sajid Khan finally gets one and Warner walks off the SCG for the last time, 57 to his name.

Hitting on the back pad again and this time, just enough of the ball - more than half - is going on to hit leg stump. Warner raises the bat to a standing ovation.

A nice milestone for Labuschagne too as he takes charge after lunch. He came in at 1-0 and put Australia immediately at ease alongside Warner, driving and reverse-sweeping the spinners throughout.

Eight boundaries in his 66 balls, including the flick off his pads for four to raise the bat. This is his 17th Test fifty and third in four knocks after scoring 60 in the first innings here and 63 in Melbourne.
