At about the same time Cory Bernardi was finalising plans to quit the Liberal Party, a divisive populist with far more runs on the board was making the case against the French political establishment.
"We are at a crossroad - this election is a choice of civilisation," Marine Le Pen told a 3000-strong crowd in Lyon on Sunday as she officially launched her presidential campaign.
