Australian companies close operations in Port Moresby amid violence

The outbreak of violence in Papua New Guinea has forced major Australian companies with businesses in the country to shutter their offices.

Westpac and ANZ, the two Australian banks with a presence in PNG, have closed their branches and corporate offices since Thursday. Port Moresby is being patrolled by soldiers and police after rioting led to the death of at least 16 people this week. The government has declared a 14-day state of emergency.
