As US President-elect Donald Trump has remade the Republican Party over the past eight years, several of his nominees to serve in his next cabinet have undergone their own political evolutions, tacking sharply to the right as figures and ideas once considered fringe have entered the party’s mainstream.
Of all of Trump’s cabinet nominees, though, perhaps none have covered quite as much political ground as former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard, whom Trump has tapped to serve as his director of national intelligence (DNI).
