Washington | When Andrew Johnson became the first United States president to be impeached in 1868, the first epoch-changing trans-Atlantic cable had only just been laid.

In that simpler media age it would have taken weeks or months for news of Congress’s ultimately failed attempt to thrust Johnson out of the White House for “high crimes and misdemeanours” to filter across a continent still crawling out from beneath the devastation of the Civil War.
