She is the former Arizona congresswoman shot in the head outside a grocery store in 2011 while conducting a public meeting for constituents. The shooter injured 19 people and killed six. Giffords has faced years of therapy and operations, resigning from Congress in 2012 and setting up a foundation with her husband to support gun control.
