Free trade agreements are protectionist, Lighthizer says

London | US President Donald Trump's trade envoy has ripped into countries for signing free trade agreements (FTAs) with each other, saying the deals were unfair, protectionist and undermined the multilateral system.

"The tendency ... to enter into massive numbers of FTAs, ... that is one of the biggest challenges to the multilateral trading system," US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told the British think tank Chatham House. "We should get rid of them."
