A gruesome attack on revellers celebrating New Year’s in New Orleans that left at least 15 dead and dozens injured has thrust US domestic security back into the spotlight, less than three weeks before Donald Trump is sworn in as president.

The attack, by 42-year-old US Army veteran Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar in the emblematic Bourbon Street area of the French Quarter, is being probed as an act of terrorism. Police, who shot him dead after a brief firefight, found a flag of the Islamic State group in his truck.
