Washington | Joe Biden’s leadership appeared at risk after a faltering performance in the first US presidential debate on Thursday (Friday AEST) that sparked a wave of panic in his party about whether a new nominee should take on rival Donald Trump at the November 5 election.

After a week of preparations, Mr Biden looked shaky on stage with Mr Trump during the 90-minute debate televised to millions of Americans, freezing up and mumbling in confusion on key issues of tax and Medicare.
