Minneapolis | Relieved Democrats were quick to throw their support behind US Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden succumbed to intensifying pressure and abandoned his re-election rematch against Donald Trump.

Mr Biden’s decision to step aside, on Monday AEST, amid concerns about his mental and physical ability, leaves Ms Harris just over three months to convince swing state voters to back the Democrats against a resurgent Republican Party whose candidate is leading in most polls.
