Why Pope Leo XIV shouldn’t be a media star like Pope Francis

If he must speak out – after all, it’s in his job description – I’d also like him to speak out about the things on which late pontiff was largely silent.

For the last couple of weeks, it’s felt like everyone in the Catholic Church online had an opinion on whom the new Pope should be. There’s been a long process of bet-hedging, horse-trading, tyre-kicking, and all-round snooping into the backgrounds of the cardinal electors.

I don’t think anyone saw an American Pope coming, but here he is – the former Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old Augustinian scholar and teacher, a naturalised Peruvian citizen and, until lately, a senior Vatican official.
