Britain’s Labour Party swept into power in Britain on Friday, making Keir Starmer the world’s leading centre-left political leader as voters across the West move right.

The trouncing of the Conservative government, which looks likely to lose about 200 of its 344 seats, will be a blow to the morale of Australia’s Liberal-National coalition. The election was fought over problems that dominate Australian politics: perceived out-of-control immigration, steep housing costs exacerbating generational inequality, and inflation that undermines middle-class living standards.
