Justified or double standard? Sam Kerr loses the culture war

A jury unanimously decided Kerr was not guilty of a racial offence. But the court of public opinion remains divided: is it racist to use “white” as an insult?

London | When Sam Kerr scores a goal for Australia or Chelsea, her on-field exuberance is often unbridled: there might be a backflip, or she’ll punch the corner flag, or even whip her shirt off. But at Kingston Crown Court, her victory celebration was a lot more muted.

As the jury confirmed its not guilty verdict – absolving her of a charge of intentional racially aggravated harassment – a demure Kerr’s head went down into her hands, presumably in huge relief.
