Jess Fox’s next race is for a place on the IOC

The queen of kayaking is trying to win election to a key Olympic body – a sign that she might see herself as an Australian sporting leader in the making.

Jess Fox is already the most successful individual medallist in Australian Olympic history, winning two gold medals in four days to become canoeing’s greatest athlete. But she’s not done yet.

On Monday, assuming she gets through the elimination rounds, she could bid for a third gold – in a novel event called kayak cross, a more gladiatorial version of the sport that has been introduced to spice up the Paris Games. If she did that, her status as an Olympic champion would go from lofty to untouchable.
