At the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine some 10 months ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky now-famously told allies that he needed ammo, not a ride.
Thankfully, Ukraine’s democratic allies recognised the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine and put in place unprecedented military and humanitarian aid. This includes Australia, which in per capita terms has arguably done more than any non-NATO ally, including the provision of some 90 Bushmasters that are currently involved in the recapture of Ukrainian land in the south and east. The “ammo” has flowed; when combined with the skill and sacrifice of Ukraine’s fighting personnel, it is tipping the war in favour of Ukraine’s battlefield victory.
