London | Southern Europe is reeling under a sustained and searing heatwave which, combined with a prolonged drought, is setting off bushfires, pushing up shipping costs and claiming lives.
The “Charon” anticyclone, named after the mythical ancient Greek ferryman who ships souls to hell, is pushing temperatures in Italy, Greece and Spain towards the record 48.8 degrees notched up in Sicily in 2021.
