Brussels reluctant to play referee in football’s Super League drama
Brussels/London | European football is gripped in a civil war, with both sides hoping Brussels will prove the ultimate arbiter.
The decision by a group of 12 rich European clubs to set up a money-spinning Super League has sparked widespread condemnation by fans, politicians and EU commissioners. It has prompted threats of punitive sanctions from Europe’s footballing body UEFA, which on Monday (Tuesday AEST) warned it would ban players joining the breakaway from competing in international tournaments.
