London | British and European leaders have talked up the prospects of avoiding a disruptive no-deal Brexit at the end of October, signalling that there may be a chance of a last-gasp compromise.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been earbashing European leaders on the phone all week, and his ministers and officials have been on planes to Dublin and Brussels, stepping up efforts to broker a Brexit deal that can satisfy EU concerns and also get through Britain's Parliament.
