Liu Bing was still in university when he decided to become a Chinese Communist Party member to improve his career prospects after graduation.

“I thought I would have a much brighter future if I joined the party. I don’t remember it being a very special moment for me personally. It was like being a model student – it was a way to improve yourself,” Liu, whose real name was changed to protect his identify, says in an interview by telephone from Shanghai.
