On Sunday night 11 activists known to be targeted by Thailand's military-dominated government took the lead in the biggest protest Bangkok has seen for years and marched to a nearby police station.

It was, said eyewitness and Human Rights Watch researcher Sunai Phasuk, a breathtaking act of defiance.
