Taiwan’s new president warns China’s threats ‘will not disappear’

Taipei | Newly installed Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has warned China’s aggression against the island country will “not simply disappear”, but committed to preserving the nation’s de facto independence as it ramps up its military defences.

Speaking to thousands gathered in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei on Monday, Mr Lai urged China to “cease their political and military intimidation against Taiwan” but acknowledged that Beijing was not about to drop its claims on the island.
