South Korea’s president faces revolt over US security ties
After his party’s loss in parliamentary elections, Yoon Suk-yeol is under pressure over his pivot to a stronger US alliance and perceived anti-China policies.
Daniel SneiderSouth Korea’s parliamentary elections this month dealt a major blow to President Yoon Suk-yeol. The opposition Democratic Party won convincingly and together with its progressive allies will hold a commanding majority in the National Assembly.
Yoon now faces an invigorated opposition eager to challenge him on every front. His ruling conservative People Power Party is fractured and likely to descend into a battle for succession that may leave Yoon increasingly isolated within his own party.
