Tokyo | Chinese authorities are scrambling to erase online images of protest banners calling for the removal of leader Xi Jinping, which were draped over an overpass in Beijing just days before the opening of the Communist Party’s five-yearly national congress.

The banners, which also called for democracy and an end to Mr Xi’s zero-COVID policies, shocked many in China, where public criticism of the Communist Party and the country’s leaders is extremely rare.
