Japan reels after massive earthquake hits west coast
Tokyo | At least 55 people were killed and more than 50,000 were forced to flee their homes in Japan after a series of powerful earthquakes triggered the country’s first major tsunami warning since the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
One of the places hardest hit from Monday’s magnitude-7.6 tremor was Wajima, a city of about 23,000 people known for its lacquerware and fishing port on the Sea of Japan. A fire in the heart of the city after the quake engulfed about 200 structures, Kyodo News reported.
