Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is stepping down this week after 20 years in the job, and Lawrence Wong – his 51-year-old deputy – is set to succeed him.

The official announcement of the succession last month was remarkably prosaic, reading and feeling more like notification of a high-level personnel change in the civil service than the arrival of a new prime minister.
