Inside China’s angry push to win Trump’s trade war

J.D. Vance has inadvertently fuelled nationalistic fervour inside China to ride out the global trade war by shopping locally and spurning US imports.

I t was a flippant comment, one of many Vice President J.D. Vance has probably made since his boss, Donald Trump, launched a trade war against China and the rest of the world.

But the derogatory remark hit a nerve among ordinary Chinese already bristling at the hefty tariffs slapped on Chinese and American goods as tensions between the world’s two largest economies escalated.
