Shanghai | Hong Kong protesters stood down on Sunday while the city held local government elections which will provide the first official barometer of public support for either the pro-democracy movement or Carrie Lam's administration.

At 930pm (0030 AEST), an hour before the polls closed, almost 3 million of the record 4.1 million registered voters had cast their ballot.
