Emboldened China signs Pacific mining deal amid Tasman naval drills

A minerals exploration deal between China and the Cook Islands is the latest push by Beijing to step up its influence in a region historically aligned with the US and its allies.

Tokyo | China has secured a strategic foothold in the Pacific’s mineral resources, signing a five-year seabed exploration agreement with the Cook Islands amid escalating regional tensions over Beijing’s naval activities off Australia’s east coast.

The deal, which gives Chinese companies access to potential cobalt deposits in Cook Islands’ waters, coincides with unprecedented People’s Liberation Army Navy exercises off the east coast of Australia that forced commercial aircraft to alter trans-Tasman routes.
