Tokyo | China has denounced US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth’s warning of an “imminent” invasion of Taiwan, accusing Washington of inflaming regional tensions with a Cold War mindset while the US seeks to deepen military alliances across Asia.
In an article on Sunday in the English-language Global Times, considered a mouthpiece for the administration of President Xi Jinping, the foreign ministry said Hegseth’s comments that China’s army was “rehearsing for the real deal” – an invasion of Taiwan – “ignored the calls of regional countries for peace and development”.
