Tokyo | China has dropped a bombshell on pledges to stabilise relations with Australia by sentencing one of its citizens to a suspended death sentence.

Rather than brokering a deal to free Australian writer Yang Hengjun as it did with television anchor Cheng Lei last year, the Albanese government is now faced with the harshest of outcomes.
