When the ten leaders of Southeast Asia visit Australia together for first time in 2018 at the recent invitation of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the government will no doubt claim a diplomatic triumph.
But a new study of Australia's commercial contact with those same countries raises an issue which is likely to loom over all the diplomatic backslapping: why isn't business contact much stronger?
