Sydney council loses High Court plea on GST

A Sydney local council led by former Coalition minister Philip Ruddock has lost a multimillion-dollar challenge to the goods and services tax in the High Court.
Hornsby Shire Council claimed the GST it had paid since it was first introduced by the Howard government in 2000 – when Mr Ruddock was in cabinet – should be refunded because the tax did not apply to local councils.
