Here’s a tip: people resent being watched while they press ‘no tip’

Payment terminals with automated tipping prompts have increased tipping here – but new research shows customers hate the “tip surveillance” that goes with it, writes psychologist Peter Quarry.

Customers are routinely presented with a payment terminal with several tipping options. 

The first time I visited New York, I was literally chased out of a restaurant by an irate waiter spewing unprintable invective because I hadn’t thrown down some cash for a tip.

Well, the service had been slow, and the food was underwhelming, and I came with the common Australian viewpoint that tipping is both optional and contingent on a positive dining experience.
