With rising costs and sliding revenue, it is difficult to see how the current model of residential aged care is sustainable. According to StewartBrown, an accounting firm which annually surveys the financial performance of the industry, one in four providers of aged-care facilities are running at a loss.

At the same time, there is a general resistance to moving into an aged-care home unless all other options have been tried or assessed.
