YouTube’s social media ban exemption under fire as rivals seethe

Communications Department officials have privately conceded that YouTube is not primarily an educational service but will still exclude the video platform from a ban on social media use by children.

In a series of briefings and emails sent by the officials to technology companies, the popular Google-owned video service has been given its own exemption category, despite the government previously citing its educational value as the reason it would not be banned alongside Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.
