Last month Modibodi, a successful Australian player in direct-to-consumer e-commerce, quietly agreed to sell its popular “leak-proof” underwear business to a conglomerate for $140 million in cash.

Most unusually, the deal can trace its origins to the forests of northern Sweden circa 1929.
