The algorithm that could end the world

AI lacks our empathy and common sense. Giving machines the responsibility to decide to take human lives in a war would cross a moral and legal red line.

Every day there’s a new worry about artificial intelligence. AI girlfriends. AI therapists. AI job losses. AI environmental costs. Well, I have a new worry to top them all. AI nuclear war.

Last week, Foreign Minister Penny Wong gave an important speech to the Security Council of the United Nations, warning: “AI’s potential use in nuclear weapons and unmanned systems challenges the future of humanity.”
