Tech crowd can’t be trusted to regulate themselves on AI: Daniel Petre

Veteran venture capitalist and former senior Microsoft executive Daniel Petre has warned that big technology companies cannot be trusted to build artificial intelligence without laws forcing them to do the right thing, as his industry peers called for the shackles to be removed.

The federal Labor government remains split about whether new AI-specific laws are needed to cover issues such as employment, ethical development, data privacy and copyright protection, or whether AI growth should proceed within existing laws to encourage commercial and productivity gains.
