‘Nobody needs $1b’: Wave of tech money to reshape philanthropy

Daniel Petre believes the “tech wealthy” are on the cusp of transforming philanthropy as hundreds of people cash in $10 million to $100 million in venture capital returns.

Dimitry Tran counts himself among the lucky ones. Lucky to have parents who were maths teachers; lucky he won a scholarship from Vietnam to Australia; lucky he met billionaire Paul Ramsay at university; and lucky Ramsay told him he needed more than “book smarts” before he’d hire him.

“I think whoever says it’s all talent thinks too highly of themselves; there are a lot of talented people and there are a lot of hardworking people,” says Tran, who used his luck to found tech start-up Harrison.ai with his brother Aengus.
