In November 2019, Josh Vernon, the co-founder of wage access start-up Earnd sent a hopeful cold email into the ether, targeting a potential investor.

Vernon, now 24, had guessed the email address of billionaire Anglo-Australian Lex Greensill who had himself just snared a cheque from SoftBank, and within moments he was amazed to receive a reply.
