From banking to rocket science: the family behind Australia’s space bid

After a two-decade investment banking career, Adam Gilmour is just days away from launching Australia’s first locally made space rocket with the company he runs with his wife and younger brother.

It was at the end of CitiBank’s management offsite in Miami in 2011 that two of the investment bank’s managing directors decided to use a spare day before flying back to Singapore to visit the Kennedy Space Centre. During the three-hour drive north to the launch site for NASA’s Apollo missions to the moon, Adam Gilmour asked his co-head of corporate sales Lung-Nien Lee what would he do if he had a dream – you know, outside banking.

“I want to be a race car driver,” Lee answered. “What’s yours?”
