Ever wondered what companies do with their old laptops and iPhones?
Sydney entrepreneur Annette Brodie creates new opportunities for obsolete tech via her social enterprise The Reconnect Project.
Just opposite Penshurst railway station in Sydney’s south are two unassuming storefronts either side of a barber shop. One is a training facility, filled with decommissioned laptops, phones and tablets; the other is a retail and repair shop.
Here, technicians Wilbur Donaldson and Rajendra Banjara sit fiddling with tiny screwdrivers and tweezers, microscopes and Tesa tape, replacing screens on smashed iPhones and iPads. They sometimes fix other things, like Mixmasters, vintage radios and guitars, but most of their work involves smartphones, computers and gaming consoles.
