Canva’s dominance of local start-up industry laid bare

The company is now responsible for virtually all the profits achieved by local start-up investors and is worth more than the combined value of every other locally backed Australian start-up.

It’s common in venture capital for a small proportion of investments to deliver all the returns. But what if the same economics extended to an entire country, where one company’s success delivered 90 per cent of the industry’s total gains? This seems to be the case in Australia where Canva is now responsible for virtually all the profits achieved by local start-up investors.

Last week, Canva announced its valuation has doubled in just five months, which is business as usual for the start-up whose value has increased tenfold over five years.
