Mushroom mycelium is a delicate network of almost microscopic threads that has almost no strength until you use it as a bio-glue to hold together a substrate, like wood chips or straw.

This works in much the same way as creating particleboard from wood chips and shavings, which are held together with a resin. The downside of this method is that the resin often contains formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
