In a charity fundraising scene cluttered with ever more sumptuous dinners and soirées, the annual Smith Family Challenge is, well, something else.

For 14 years now, the charity has baited a few dozen wealthy volunteers into enduring a 100-kilometre adventure course, traversed over two days and featuring some sadistic mix of hiking, running, mountain biking and canoeing.
