Rio Tinto board squibs Juukan Gorge accountability

On Monday morning, AMP Limited chairman David Murray and non-executive director John Fraser resigned while executive Boe Pahari was demoted from AMP Capital’s top job after shareholders demanded accountability over the handling of a sexual harassment case at the financial services group.

Shareholders have also demanded “true accountability” from Rio Tinto, which on May 24 destroyed the Juukan Gorge caves – demonstrably occupied by Aboriginal people 46,000 years ago – over the protests of their traditional owners. And on Monday morning, Rio Tinto’s board of directors decided that three of its top executives would have their bonuses pruned this year. That’s it! Between them, those three executives were paid $17.4 million last year, so we suspect they’ll cope just fine.
